A chain reaction accident that left three dead in Commerce

Highway 5 was reopened shortly before midnight Saturday, after a nearly 24-hour total closure following a chain reaction accident started by an alleged illegal race that left three dead in Commerce, authorities said.
Eight vehicles were involved in the fatal collision that occurred shortly after midnight Saturday on East Washington Boulevard and caused the complete closure of the heavily traveled highway, according to the California Highway Patrol’s incident log.
One of the vehicles that was competing in the illegal race lost control of the vehicle and collided with an 18-wheeler cargo truck, causing the large truck to crash through the center divider destroying everything in its path. The Los Angeles Fire Department took more than an hour to finish extinguishing the flames of the fire that caused the large truck.
. The truck driver was able to escape the large burning vehicle. Four people were taken to hospital, two of them in critical condition. None of the victims have been identified.
They learned a person suspected of participating in the illegal race that caused the crash, a 35-year-old man from Whittier, according to the CHP. He would face felony charges for vehicular manslaughter. Authorities are still searching for the second pilot, who was in a dark-colored Dodge Charger. A description of the person they are looking for was not immediately provided.
